What is the The Quantified Soul all about?
What if consciousness could be measured?
What if the patterns we call “thoughts” left visible traces in the brain—and those traces revealed the architecture of the soul itself?
This publication explores that question.
The Quantified Soul is an ongoing project at the intersection of neuroscience, mathematics, and meaning. It’s built around my forthcoming book—The Quantified Soul: Neuroscience and Decoding the Mathematics of the Mind—a science-minded spiritual manifesto that replaces mystical vagueness with mathematical clarity. It argues that the soul is not a metaphor but a measurable structure—and that understanding it can transform psychology, mental health, and society itself.
Each week, I publish long-form essays (around 2,000 words) that expand on the ideas from the book: how thought becomes form, how coherence restores freedom, and how reason—applied rigorously and compassionately—can help us build a more coherent world.
Some essays connect directly to the book; others go further, tracing the same logic into culture, politics, and the psychology of civilization.
The book
The book is structured in three parts:
Foundations — How Western rationalism and ontological mathematics reveal reality as a living field of mind, not inert matter.
Form — How the infinite soul takes finite shape through the brain, where frequency, amplitude, and phase form the geometry of perception.
Implications — What it means for psychology, neuroscience, and society if the soul can be observed, measured, and developed.
If the brain is the instrument, the soul is the musician.
When their rhythms align, we experience coherence—clarity, creativity, and compassion arising from structure.
The same principles that organize a psyche also organize civilizations. Understanding that relationship is the key to both personal transformation and collective evolution.
What we explore here
The Psychology of the Soul: How inner structure shows up in the brain’s measurable activity; why patterns of attention, emotion, and intention can be modeled as mathematics.
Rational Spirituality: A post-woo synthesis of science and philosophy: meaning without superstition, reason without reductionism.
The Neurotherapy Revolution: How emerging tools (EEG, tACS, neurofeedback, neuromodulation) reveal—and refine—the structure of consciousness.
Self-Actualization as Science: If coherence can be quantified, could enlightenment be mapped?
Love as Geometry: Reframing love as resonance between minds—the expansion of amplitude, not a poetic abstraction.
The General Will: How aligned minds create harmony not through obedience but through resonance; what collective consciousness really means.
Culture as a Mirror of Mind: Essays on rebellion, power, technology, and music—from critiques of Curtis Yarvin’s “Dark Enlightenment” to reflections on U2, AC/DC, and the physics of conscience. Each piece asks how a clearer understanding of mind could help us design a saner, freer, and more coherent world.
These essays aren’t speculation for its own sake. They’re part of a larger experiment: translating philosophy into data, and data into meaning.
Who I Am
I’m James Croall—a certified QEEG technologist, neurotherapy practitioner, and former Silicon Valley systems engineer.
For over 25 years I debugged complex technologies. Now I debug the human mind.
In my San Francisco neurotherapy practice, I use quantitative EEG, neurofeedback, and neuromodulation to help people restore cognitive balance and emotional coherence. The same logic that governs code and circuits turns out to govern consciousness itself.
My writing brings these two worlds together—the measurable and the mystical, the neurological and the philosophical—through one unifying question:
What happens when the soul becomes visible?
Why Subscribe
The Quantified Soul is for readers who sense that science and spirituality have been talking past each other—and who are ready for a framework that unites them through logic instead of belief.
Subscribers receive new essays every week—free, ad-free, and written for thinkers who want depth, not slogans.
If you’ve ever wondered whether consciousness could have an equation—welcome.
This is where we start to write it.
